Winter road safety

Officers from the Road Policing Department at Stonehaven will be carrying out high visibility patrols and static road checks throughout the Kincardine area.

The initiative immediately precedes the ACPOS Festive Road Safety Campaign and is aimed at educating and advising motorists on vehicle safety during the winter months. The patrols began this week and will conclude on Friday 2 December.

Roads Policing Inspector Ian Kirkwood, who is coordinating the operation, emphasised officers will be looking to stop and speak to as many road users as they can, not only to promote the road safety message, but also to give general home and vehicle security tips during the dark winter nights. He said: “Road Policing Staff will be taking the time to educate drivers on the importance of ensuring their vehicles are prepared for winter. It should be stressed that this initiative is not all about enforcement and that we want to remind drivers of their responsibilities, particularly at this time of year. During the winter months it is essential that motorists are well prepared and we will be stressing to drivers that preparation should start before the journey. Carrying out some simple checks of tyres, lights and fluid levels will assist in the long run.

“I would encourage anyone who is unsure about carrying out these checks to seek professional advice. Many garages offer this service free of charge or for a nominal fee. In severe weather, such as we had last year, motorists should seriously consider whether their journey is really necessary.”
