But for many, the winter wonderland caused chaos, with commuters facing a longer and more treacherous journey to work and school than normal.

A blizzard on Tuesday afternoon saw the snow falling thick and fast, and the showers continued throughout the evening and night.

Lairhillock Primary School transport was cancelled on Wednesday, and motorists were advised to avoid the B979 Netherley road owing to poor driving conditions.

The stretch of the A90 between Stonehaven and Portlethen saw huge tailbacks heading north while, southbound, one car crashed into a lamp post near Portlethen, and another came to grief outside Newtonhill.

The wintry weather isn’t all miserable though, and many youngsters will have relished the opportunity to enjoy the snow.
