One of two trees nicknamed ‘Adam and Eve’ disappeared from the Mearns landscape last month during strong gales.

The trees, which stood on opposite sides of the road near Fettercairn, mirrored each other and seemed to meet to form an archway.

An inscription has appeared on the stump of the removed tree.

They appear on maps as early as 1865, and were a local landmark.

Gales in early January brought one of the great trees down - Adam - and the stump has now been sawn off but can still be seen.

However, keen not to let the memory of the two trees be forgotten just yet, someone has taken it upon themselves to leave a note of remembrance, from one tree to the other.

Inscribed on the stump where ‘Adam’ once stood, now reads ‘RIP Adam, 9/1/15. Forever in my heart, gone but nor forgotten. Eve.’
