ATHLETIC travelled to Hillhead last week to face Halliburton in the final of the Castle Rovers Cup.
Manager Cameron just about had a full squad to pick from with only Martin McLean unavailable through work commitments.
The game started at a frantic pace with both teams looking to gain the early advantage, but no real opportunities were created.
S Reid had a good chance on the half hour mark, but he failed to finish from a tight angle, while at the other end Athletic were lucky not to concede when the Halliburton striker rounded keeper Anderson only to find the side netting.
Athletic nearly took the lead just before half-time when an S Reid header was met by Milne whose looping header was cleared off the line.
The second half started as the first had ended with no real great football being played, both teams had half chances but nothing hitting the target.
On 65 minutes Athletic had their best chance when S Reid released Henderson on goal, but the veteran defender managed to get his legs tangled before firing wide.
Athletic brought on Ross and Forrest as they attempted to get the winner, on 75 minutes they got their goal.
Some good work from Mitchell found S REID whose shot somehow managed to find the net through a host of defenders.
Athletic could have increased their lead further with substitutes Ross and Forrest both spurning good opportunities.
Halliburton's response was minimal and Athletic held out for victory and indeed their first competitive trophy in over 30 years – all players and management should be very proud of this achievement.
In a game that brought not much in the way of football action, picking a man of the match was very difficult, but Scott Reid gets the nod for his match winning contribution.
Final Score: Halliburton 0 - Stonehaven Athletic 1
