FRIENDS and teammates of tragic teenager Catherine Gomez, who died last year, are organising a football tournament in her memory.
A former Mackie Academy pupil and member of Stonehaven Girls football team, 16-year-old Catherine moved with her family to Mallorca and sadly died in a car accident last summer.
The tournament is being organised by Sabrina Alexander and Nickola McL
ean, both 17, who met Catherine while playing for the under 15s football team, and will begin on Monday June 23, to mark the first anniversary of her death.
Sabrina said: "Catherine loved football and I thought this would be a good way to pay our respects to her. A lot of people couldn't make it to the funeral in Mallorca, so this will give everyone a chance to remember her."
Catherine's family hope to make the trip back to Stonehaven to attend the tournament, which will last for four days.
On Monday June 23, the girls' teams will be competing, with Primary teams on the Tuesday, Academy teams on Wednesday, and Teams 17 and above on the final day, Thursday June 26.
The games will be held at the juniors pitch in Mineralwell Park, Stonehaven, with teams required to pay £5 each for entry.
Money raised will go towards putting up a plaque at the football pavilion at Mineralwell Park.
Sabrina explained that any remaining cash will go towards more football games in Catherine's honour.
She said: "Catherine's football team in Spain have invited our team to play over there so we're trying to raise money for that as well."
Teams are required to register by 4.30pm on each day, and kick off will be 5pm.
Sabrina didn't rule out the possibility of turning the tournament into an annual event, saying: "Other towns have annual tournaments, and Stonehaven doesn't really have that. If it goes well it would be good to carry it on and do it every year."
Any teams interested in taking part in the Gomez Tournament can contact Sabrina Alexander on 07849 344036.
