HEAVY rain in the late morning had golfers scurrying for cover on Saturday as the wettest start for years to a golf season continued.
More than 100 members at Stonehaven Golf Club had entered for the Cancer Care Stableford event but, on the day, only 73 teed off, with many giving up before the end of their round as the greens flooded.
The course had been closed all week owing to
the persistent rain but an overnight wind dried up the greens sufficiently well to allow play to proceed.
Though the fairways were wet underfoot, the early starters enjoyed good conditions before the rain descended in the late morning, sending the scores up high enough to merit a CSS of 68, the same as the week before.
Good golf was possible, however, as David Cusiter showed when he played through the worst of the weather to total 37 points and win the competition.
The experienced Glennie Melvin, playing off 6, was out earlier and he shot round for an excellent 36 points, closely followed by another early bird Neil Irvine on 35, a poor reward for an almost flawless second nine and score of 68.
Some warming liquid was also flowing in the clubhouse when Terry Middleton came in – not to celebrate his 31 points but to toast his hole in one at the fourteenth, thanks to a perfectly-struck eight iron, his second ace at that hole.
Cancer Care Stableford: (leading scores): 37 points David Cusiter (7); 36 Glennie Melvin (6); 35 Neil Irvine (1), Jacek Nowak (15), Alistair Duncan (9); 34 Alister Barnett (13), Bob Smith (12); 33 Steve Peacock (17), Brian Hunter (7), Neil Walker (15), Harry Roulston (5),; 32 Duncan Ewing (17), Gary Brown (5); 31 Tom Simpson (27), Terry Middleton (10), Bob Leggate (6).

Another big entry is expected for this Saturday's competition, the first round of the Cowie Cup.
The wet weather also disrupted the ladies' golf section last week with their first competition being cancelled as the course was closed.

A Texas Scramble was held on Sunday, a fun competition over nine-holes, which was won by "Fiona's Fillies" with a score of 23.
Later in the day, the junior girls were rained off their first game of the season, but all eight girls stayed to enjoy their prize giving followed by a meal.
The prizewinners were: Junior Champion, Eve Bicker, who also won two 18-hole medals, two 9-hole Stablefords and one monthly club competition. Runner-up was Fiona McDonald, who also won one 9-hole Stableford.
The Handicap Champion was Lucy Garden, who also won one 9-hole Stableford.
The winners of the 9-hole Greensome were Lucy Garden and Rachel Wood.
The girls' competitions will continue on Sunday afternoons and coaching has been organised with Andrew Locke of Inchmarlo.
