NEVER ever back down. Not only words on James Ancliff's training t-shirt, but a phrase the gallant boxer has taken to heart.
The Fettercairn fighter is currently in the midst of trying to immediately bounce back from his first stoppage defeat.
Undoubtedly he is facing a difficult task.
Any time a pugilist fails to last the distance, it is not just the feeling of disapp
ointment that can weigh heavily on the mind.
Sorely needed confidence might diminish or worse still, over-analysis of the defeat can throw a boxer off his stride.
In a sport where adversity can arrive on the end of one stiff blow, being in tune mentally holds equal value with physical fitness.
But from watching Ancliff being put through his paces at Aberdeen's Granite City Boxing Club, the signs are that he is all set to once again explode into action this month.
Warming-up with an almost relentless period of rhythmic skipping, the 24-year-old looks nimble in shifting easily from toe-to-toe.
Focussed yet relaxed, it appears Ancliff would be able to bounce gracefully on the spot all night.
But he doesn't need to be asked twice by coach Davey McAllister to put on his gloves and enter the ring for some important pad work.
The strikes are crisp, accurate and powerful, with quick combinations finding their mark.
A sterner task follows when Ancliff spars for a couple of rounds with a long, rangy opponent, who has all the tools to nullify the featherweight's patented 'All Action' style.
Meanwhile, from the ring at the back of the rugged gym all the way down to the front door, young hopefuls work tirelessly and sweat profusely in their own individual quests for boxing glory.Ancliff ends his session by blasting punches against the heavy bag, which takes all the punishment he can dish out.
No doubt Ancliff will be seeking to do a similar number on whatever opponent he steps into the ring with for a bout on Saturday in Glasgow.
The fight comes just two months after the frustrating third-round loss to Buster Dennis in mid-March.
It is an early chance for redemption and one Ancliff appears ready to take with both hands.
