A MEMBER of Newtonhill Netball Club has won a place in the Scotland Under 17 Squad.
Lois Bannerman's achievement follows a rigorous selection process last year, which saw a field of 95 hopefuls from all over Scotland gradually whittled down to the final squad of 12.
Lois (16), has been playing netball for eight years with her club
, which is based at the Bettridge Centre in Newtonhill. She has also played at District level for the past four years and taken part in the national Pathways initiative, preparing young players for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
It takes a great deal of commitment to play her sport at a national level: Lois has to attend intensive training sessions in Glasgow twice a month, plus fixtures such as the World Championships in Ireland later this year - and on top of all that, she will also be taking her Highers this summer.
"It will be a challenge," she said. "But it's such an honour to play for my country and I'm really looking forward to the experience. The training will be hard, but I love playing netball. It's fantastic to be part of a team and to play such a fast-moving game, which is just as demanding mentally as it is physically."
Ultimately this talented youngster hopes to join the squad which will represent Scotland for the first time at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
"That would be a dream come true," she said. "It would make all the hard work worthwhile."
