FOUR Mearns motor sport fanatics will fulfil their need for speed by competing in Saturday's Granite City Rally.
Portlethen duo Chris Collie and Roy Kemp will be joined in racing through Kincardineshire forests by brothers Andrew and Gordon Ritchie.
The renowned event will be just the third rally newcomer Chris has participated in.
The 27-year-old turned to
car racing when a painful hip injury interrupted his promising football career with leading junior side Culter.
Chris underwent surgery last year and still has pins inserted in his upper leg.
He would like to return to football in the future, but in the meantime is happy to test himself in the 39th running of the Granite City Rally.
Chris said: "I am really looking forward to Saturday and it is going to be a real challenge."
The former Portlethen Academy pupil is hoping for a happier outcome than in his last event.
He explained: "My previous rally was in the Borders where I wrote my car off when I rolled it on stage five. I was doing quite well at the time and my times were good, but these things happen."
Chris will be partnered by fellow Stonehaven and District Motor Club member Roy Kemp, who expects the forest stages to provide a tough examination of his navigational skills.
He said: "Most of my career has been spent on tarmac, which is faster but a lot less extreme than forests, where you constantly have to be on the ball with your notes."
While Chris is ready for his Granite City Rally debut, the Ritchies are taking part in the event for the 13th time.
Catterline-based Gordon said: "We have not been competing so much in recent years but always try and make an effort to support our local event. We are also looking to improve our luck as last year the engine blew up on the first spectator stage at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre and we did not make into the forests. Andrew has been busy over the winter rebuilding the engine and hopefully everything will be going well."
The rally starts at the Altens Thistle Hotel with crews tackling stages in demanding forests including Fetteresso, Glenfarquhar and Drumtochty.
There is a service halt at Mackie Academy on Saturday morning.
Chris, who is being sponsored by Smith International this weekend, is hopeful of attracting financial assistance that will help him to compete in all Scottish Rally Championship events next season.
