LAST Thursday saw the second annual school rugby festival for the Aberdeenshire South region run by Mackie Academy FP development officer Rob Potter.
The eventual winners for the under 15 and 18 trophies were Mackie Academy, with both teams undefeated in this year's competition.
The event brings together three local academies, Mackie, Mearns and Portlethen and this year in their first appearance
Lathallan School, which entered an under 15 side. Under the guidance of Richard Toley, Lathallan have had a successful first season of school rugby with notable wins in the Bell Lawrie Scottish national cup and wins over larger and more traditional rugby-playing schools.
Mackie development officer Rob Potter will be working more closely with the school next season to improve the relationship with the club and support rugby development.
During the festival of rugby the Lathallan squad were unable to gain a win, losing to the Mackie and Mearns under 15 squads. However, they managed good scores in both the games and will look to build for next season with the younger players stepping up a level.
Mearns under 15s have had a fantastic season with a mention for James Sadio who has supported both Rob Potter and Richard Taylor to give the young lads at Mearns the opportunities which they have taken this season. With a quarter-final place in the Bell Lawrie and semi-final place in the North of Scotland Cup the under 15 squad has enjoyed great success over the season, led excellently by Lloyd Carnegie and Scott Irvine who have been impressive all season both on and off the field.
In the Final of the Festival of rugby under 15's the Mearns squad lost narrowly to Mackie in the Ross Deeptech Trophy, which saw a repeat of last year's final where Mearns narrowly lost out. The final saw hard hits, fast running rugby and passionate players as regular team mates on Saturday gave their all for the success of the school.
Mackie, the eventual winners, have had a fantastic season with a quarter-final place in the Bell Lawrie cup and runners up in the North of Scotland Cup, narrowly losing to eventual winners RGC. The squad finally picked up some silverware by winning the Ross Deeptech trophy on Thursday.
In the Under 18 event 7-a-side competition Mackie completed a victory over pre tournament and title holders Mearns in the first match by coming back from two tries down, the substitute of man of the tournament Marcus Gibbs seemed to unsettle the Mearns squad and Mackie pulled through with fine finishing from Mathew Greig.
In the second match Mackie had a comfortable victory over Portlethen who managed a team of ringers and past players due to a number of call off's from the regular players. In the final game, with Mackie already crowned champions, Mearns entertained Portlethen with the Hector Memorial Trophy at stake played between the two schools annually.
Sadly a freak injury to Mearns Players Marcus Gibbs forced the game to a halt and all at the club and competing schools wished him all the best in his recovery.
