Athletic’s poor run of form continued with a lacklustre performance against West End on Saturday at Mineralwell in the second round of the Association Cup.
Jolly and Willsher had early chances for Athletic but both were spurned.
This proved costly and the visitors went ahead after 20 minutes with their striker finishing well from 12 yards.
Athletic went up the other end and Forrest shot over under pressure.
The visitors increased their lead with another well taken effort just before the break.
The second period stared much the same as the first with Athletic going forward but only Ross Mackenzie in midfield looked up to the task. Willsher had a chance to score from O’Brien’s corner but he could not force the ball home from close range.
With time running out, Athletic got a lifeline when Reid shot home from 12 yards after good work down the right.
This should have allowed Athletic to chase for the equaliser, however when the Athletic defence failed to deal with a ball through the middle West End’s centre broke clear and fired passed Middleton. The visitors confirmed their victory with two minutes left when their midfielder shot home from 20 yards.
This was a really poor performance by Athletic. The home side will need to show much improvement in the coming weeks if they want to avoid another end of season relegation dogfight.
