After three successive cup victories, Athletic’s “Road to Hampden” came to an end when they travelled to Inverurie and lost to Beacon Rangers in the second round of the Scottish Amateur Cup.
Athletic got off to the worst possible start when their hosts took the lead after only 3 minutes. A long throw was launched into the Athletic area and keeper Middleton climbed above a cluster of bodies to punch clear. However, the ball fell to a home midfielder at the edge of the area who coolly lobbed the ball into the far corner to open the scoring.
Athletic gradually got themselves back into the game and Elliott soon had a great chance to equalise. Great inter play between Robb and Reid released Elliott in on goal but he steered his effort agonisingly wide.
Beacon then increased their lead. Another long throw was this time aimed at goal and under pressure from the home attackers, Middleton only succeeded in palming the ball into his own net.
Not to be undone, Athletic went straight up the park and scored. Great play down the right saw the ball played into the box and Cordiner saw his effort stopped on the line by a great one handed save. Unfortunately for the hosts, this was made by a defender, who was promptly red carded. Elliott saw his first effort saved but after the referee ordered a retake, fired the ball home.
The equaliser should have come after stramash in the home box. A McKenzie corner was knocked goalwards by a home defender and the keeper palmed it clear. The rebound was fired back but the ball refused to cross the line.
Within three minutes of the restart, Athletic again found themselves two goals down. A free kick was awarded wide on the left and when the ball was fired in, poor defending saw the ball knocked in at the far post. The game was ended as a contest when the home side scored a fourth.
