Athletic went into this match on Saturday knowing that a victory was vital in their fight to avoid relegation, however yet another disappointing show has plunged them even deeper into trouble.
With regular keeper Middleton injured it was veteran Taylor between the sticks for Athletic and after only four minutes he was picking the ball out of the net. Holtes struggled to clear his lines on the bumpy pitch and the ball fell to a Luthermuir striker who lashed home from 12 yards.
Athletic tried to hit back right away but there was little cohesion between midfield and the forwards and it was no surprise when the visitors increased their lead.
Luthermuir were awarded a corner when Athletic felt it should have been a goal kick, however that can be no excuse for the poor defending which allowed the ball to run across the six yard box to be easily turned past the helpless Taylor.
The home side created a good chance in 30 minutes but unfortunately A MacKenzie fired over from 8 yards.
Luthermuir got the decisive third goal just before the break. Bowron pulled down their winger as he ran into the box and Anderson scored from the spot.
The home side had more possession in the second period however they never tested the Luthermuir keeper who will rarely have had an easier afternoon.
Athletic failed to take advantage of Cordiner’s aerial ability, as time and again the opportunities he created were wasted.
Understandibly the visitors slackened off after the break as they have quite a number of games to complete before the end of the season.
As for Athletic, they have only four matches to play and are in a relegation dogfight. The question is ‘do the have the bottle for the fight’? Time will tell.
