Athletic save themselves from the drop

Stonehaven Athletic 4 Insch 0

Athletic went into their penultimate league match on May 14, knowing that defeat was not an option if they were to avoid relegation and it was team spirit rather than classy football which saw them run out comfortable winners against an Insch side that had beaten them 2-0 the previous week.

The home side worked hard in the early stages but it was not until just before half-time that they made the breakthrough.

Milne flighted in a beautiful free kick from the left and Toner got in front of the keeper to score from close range.

The home side continued their dominance and 3 goals in quick succession put the result beyond doubt.

First Bowron headed home a Toner corner, then Toner added his second and Athletics’ third when he bundled the ball home after Mitchell had knocked on.

The impressive Wilkinson added a fourth with 20 minutes left as Athletic preserved their place in Division One.

Stonehaven Athletic 2 Nicolls Amateurs 5

If Saturday’s game was a must win for Athletic, this game last Wednesday was a must win for the visitors Nicolls. Despite being behind twice, Nicolls were deserved winners to keep their place in the First Division.

REID opened the scoring for Athletic after two minutes, then the visitors equalised just before the break.

Athletic went ahead again early in the second half when Wilkinson finished well.

This prompted Nicolls to step up the pace and they scored a further four times without reply.
