Bervie Caley U13 6
Bervie went into their first midweek game of the season, knowing a win would see them confirmed as league champions and this ensured a good crowd tuned out to cheer the boys on.
Bervie scored early on. S. Smith played the ball through to Anderson who in turn fed McLaughlin who outpaced a defender to slot the ball home.
Newtonhill responded and a ball in from the right saw S. Smith’s header bring out an excellent save from Leisk to prevent an own goal.
Avis crossed a delightful ball to the near post for Blacklaw to steal in ahead of his marker and keeper to give Bervie a two goal lead. Bervie took a three goal lead on the 25 minute mark when Anderson found McLaughlin for him to drive home at the back post.
On the stroke of half time Bervie had the ball in the net again, however Wotherspoon’s effort was ruled out for offside.
Bervie started the second half where they left off with efforts from Wotherspoon and Blacklaw going close. The visitors refused to lie down and Leisk had to be alert to come out and clear a through ball which threatened to open up the defence.
Newtonhill got a goal back when a shot was thumped low into the net to give the visitors hope.
To the home sides credit they took this in their stride and Wotherspoon won the ball on the left pulling it back for Blacklaw to thump the ball home from the edge of the box.
It was only a matter of time until Bervie scored another and it came from good interplay between Wotherspoon and McLaughlin on the left. The ball was pulled back to Blacklaw who hit a fantastic effort from fully 25 yards out into the top corner for his hat-trick.
It was the visitors who got the next goal. A penalty was awarded when there was a push on the attacker, however Leisk produced a great save to push the spot kick round the post. From the resultant corner Leisk got a fingertip to the ball however it dropped to an attacker who had an simple tap in at the back post.
Spurred on Bervie pushed forward and Morris played in McLaughlin whose effort was parried by the keeper but Anderson followed up and slide the ball home to restore the four goal advantage.
Again it was Newtonhill who scored next, this time an effort from the edge of the box was deflected and looped up and over Leisk who was left helpless.
This was a hard fought match between the two top teams in the league and one which Bervie had to fight hard to win, however it was a well-earned victory for Bervie Youth and one which saw them clinch the league with one match to spare.
