Bervie came into their first ever Scottish Cup tie a little short on match practise having only had one competitive match this season and this showed as last season’s Achilles heel of slow starts was evident once again.
Newmachar applied sustained early pressure and this paid off as the visitors number 7 showed Wotherspoon and Avis a clean pair of heels to slot home at the near post from a very acute angle. Bervie were struggling to string any passes together.
The lead was doubled when a long ball found the visitors striker in a suspiciously offside position for him to slot past the home keeper. This seemed to spur the home side into action and Gordon won the ball in the middle of the pitch and played a sublime ball inside the full back for Anderson to run onto and cut back onto his right side before slamming the ball home bring Bervie right back into this tie. From the restart Bervie pressed and a Blacklaw shot was only parried by the keeper leaving Anderson with a tap in at the back post to level the tie. Newmachar pressed forward again and a cross / shot from the right hand side drifted in at the back post to give the away team the lead again, undeterred Bervie went straight back up the pitch and Blacklaw looped a shot in from the edge of the box which dropped in at the back post to level the match. The home side made their first changes at this point with S. Smith and C. Thomson being replaced by B. Dawson and M. Morris respectively.
Bervie started the second half in determined mood and immediately took a grip on the game moving the ball well and creating chances. Early on Anderson took one of these chances slotting home between the keepers legs to give Bervie the lead for the first time in the match and to bag his hatrick.
Gordon was now beginning to boss the match winning everything in the middle of the pitch and this paid off with a ball to McLaughlin who slipped Morris in on goal, riding a couple of desperate challenges he kept his composure to slot the ball home low into the corner to put Bervie 5-3 up. Not settling for this lead Bervie continued to press and a short throw in to Avis and good interplay between Dawson and Wotherspoon saw Anderson control the ball in the box before slotting the ball home for Bervie’s 6th and his 4th of the day to round off a fantastic come back for the home team.
