Stonehaven Golf Club, in conjunction with the Granite City ABC, put on a 12 bout amateur boxing show on February 10 in the Town Hall, to raise funds for their junior section and will have been delighted with their efforts.

In addition to it being a sell-out, the venerable venue proved to be ideal for the boxing fans and boxers too, with an atmosphere to match that of the York Hall in Bethnal Green, the traditional home of British Boxing.

Granite City ABC’s David McAllister, (the father of European title challenger Lee McAllister) had brought boxers from as far afield as Sunderland, Fort William and Alloa as opposition for his home grown talent to give the show an international flavour.

Local solicitor Denis Daun, as principal organiser on behalf of the Golf Club, opened proceedings with grace before handing over to Tom Walker as M.C. to cover the rest of the show.

The auction held during the interval, raised further funds for the youngsters at the Golf Club with a signed Mike Tyson boxing glove allied to a raffle and the ubiquitous “heads or tails.”

A variety of local companies had kindly sponsored each of the bouts and presented trophies to both the winning and losing boxers.

It is hoped that this will become an annual event in Stonehaven as the success of this one bodes well for the town and the venue.
