Bruce wins championship

The club championship that turned into a bit of a marathon eventually got completed last Wednesday.

The evening started off with Paul Lindeman leading by 3 strokes from Bruce Ferguson, Craig Irvine and Scott Murray. By the turn Bruce had reduced the lead to 1 stroke and with a steady run of pars he then took the lead after 15 holes.

Craig Irvine eventually found his form towards the end of his round with a birdie, birdie, par finish to close the gap, but Bruce was able to par his final three holes to win by 2 strokes.

Round of the night came from former champion Graeme Adamson. His 2 under par 64 allowed him to come storming through to join Paul and Craig in joint second place. Graeme takes the runners-up spot due to his better final round. This was Bruce’s third win in a row and his fourth success in total.

Leading scores: 275 - Bruce Ferguson (67, 73, 67, 68), 277 - Graeme Adamson (70, 70, 73, 64), Craig Irvine (67, 67, 73, 70), Paul Lindeman (65, 68, 71, 73), 279 - Scott Murray, 282 - Stuart Dempster, 285 - Neil Irvine, 287 - Colin Arthur, 288 - Neil Robertson, 289 - Steven Shand, 291 - Chris Taylor, Iain Taylor, 296 - Grant Robb, 298 - Graeme Docherty, 302 - Alan Cruichshank, 304 - Stuart Wright.

In conjunction with the championship, the Gully Cup was also up for grabs. This is for the player with the best score over the gully holes over the four rounds of the championship. There was a tie at the top with Neil Irvine, Bruce Ferguson, Craig Irvine and Grant Robb all on 40 strokes. Neil took the trophy due to his better third round score.

We also have a new junior champion in Scott Murray. The third and fourth rounds were played last week and Scott’s 63, 69 finish gave him a fourteen stroke victory from Josh Halliday with Grant Robb a further stroke behind.

Scott also topped the leaderboard in the handicap championship but because he is unable to win both trophies this went to Josh Halliday. Grant Robb was a stroke behind.

Scores scratch championship: 271 - Scott Murray (68, 71, 63, 69), 285 - Josh Halliday (75, 73, 70, 67), 286 - Grant Robb(77, 72, 71, 66).

On Saturday we had the Marie Curie Cancer Care Stableford competition and there was a three way tie at the top between Jim Hepburn, Stuart Paul and Kevin Reid with 41 points. Jim took the honours due to his better inward half. A further two points behind were Gordon Adamson and Neil Irvine in joint fourth place.

Last Monday the men played a Deeside league match away to Ballater. The first and second games went to the 18th green but regretfully that was the only highlight as all results went Ballater’s way.

Results: (Ballater names first) - S Gow & C Mitchell beat Kevin Riddell & Chris Taylor 1 up, F Anderson & A Wood beat Stuart Wright & Gordon Lamont 2 up, S Thomson & J Sinclair beat Brian Lawson & Eric Dickie 4&2, R Farquharson & G Chalmers beat Alan Cruickshank & John Stephen 5&4, S Grieve & R Sinclair beat Doug Lorimer & Luis Arandia 2&1, M Molloy & R Chalmers beat Mark Rollo & Jim Hepburn 5&4.

There was also a disappointing result in the Aberdeen Pennant League with Stonehaven playing Royal Aberdeen at home. We just missed out in achieving a half match against a strong Royal Aberdeen team. First pairing of Chris Taylor and young Grant Robb were very unlucky to go down by 1 hole against against a 1 and +2 handicapper.

Results: Chris Taylor & Grant Robb lost 1 down to A Reith & N McAndrew, Kevin Riddell & Ross McAllan lost 2&1 to W Barclay & D McAndrew, Gordon Adamson & Neil Irvine beat M Black & W Park 6&5, Bruce Ferguson & Steven Shand lost 3&2 to M Wilson & R Laird, Graeme Adamson & Paul Lindeman beat G Webster & A Buchan 2&1.
