Comprehensive win v Banchory

Stonehaven Thistle 2nd XI 189

Banchory 2nd XI 77

On Saturday the second eleven travelled to Banchory hoping to continue their revival of form. Skipper Dave Long Sr. lost the toss and was asked to bat first.

S. Crozier and D. Crozier opened the batting. D. Crozier started positively, despatching a full-toss to the boundary, but then failed to guard his leg stump and was bowled out in the 2nd over.

J. Crozier joined his father and looked confident as they started to build a partnership.

With J. Crozier regularly hitting boundaries (including two massive sixes) the scoring rate reached 5 runs per over and the batsmen were looking untroubled. After 12 overs S. Crozier lofted a short ball and was caught for 16 with the score on 58.

Gibson joined J. Crozier and again added a valuable partnership. Crozier continued to score boundaries at will and Gibson joined in with a 6 and some 4s of his own.

After 15 overs and a partnership of 85 runs Gibson was caught at slip for 22 off N. Critchley. Later in the same over J. Crozier’s innings finally came to an end, bowled for 91 extremely valuable runs with the score 144 for 4 off 27 overs.

King came in and hit a bright 10 runs but then a flush of wickets threatened to start a collapse. Long Sr. and King were both caught off Wilkinson, then Long Jr. was bowled and the score was 164 for 7.

New player Atkinson came to the crease and played some high quality shots. After scoring a valuable 15 he was caught off Wilkinson, as was Gouws, bringing second new player Croft to join Buchanan. Both batsmen hit powerful boundaries before Croft was stumped and the innings ended.

The final score of 189 off 38 overs was lower than it might have been if more batsmen could have stayed in.

King and D. Long Jr. again opened the bowling and applied pressure from the start. In the third over Banchory’s captain Hicks lofted a drive to Croft and was out to an excellent catch.

In the next over Turriff was out first ball attempting to hit Long over the top but was caught by J. Crozier with another smart catch.

King then had Morris caught behind by Long Sr. bringing N. Critchley to join Wilkinson. These two attempted to re-build the innings, but when Critchley was also caught by Croft off Long the score was 44 for 4.

Gouws took the important Wilkinson, caught by S. Crozier at silly mid-off for 18. D. Crozier then had M. Critchley caught behind, a second excellent catch by the skipper. Garret was also out to Crozier for 3 – a very sharp reflex catch by Atkinson at square leg and the score was 54 for 7.

Gouws then sent down a series of unplayable deliveries. Pitching the ball up he gave the batsmen no time to react and two batsmen were clean bowled in quick succession reducing Banchory to 55 for 9. Gouws finished with figures of 3 for 13 off 8 overs and his bowling seems to get better with every match.

With the last two batsmen digging in for a draw Atkinson was brought on to bowl. In his third over he bowled W. Redpath for 9, finishing with 1 for 6. Crozier finished with 2 for 14 off 9. Banchory were all out for 77 in a comprehensive win for Stonehaven. This was a true all-round display with contributions from everyone. In particular Thistle’s fielding is ahead of any other team in Grade 3 and the new players have been a great addition.

For his 91 runs and some excellent fielding James Crozier was named Man of the Match. The match ball was sponsored by the Station Hotel.
