COWIE LOST PENULTIMATE LEAGUE GAME

Kincorth 4 Cowie Thistle 2 ON a blistering hot Saturday afternoon, Thistle played Kincorth in their penultimate league game.

In their previous game, Thistle had staved off any threat of relegation and this meaningless game wasn't played to the same high tempo as we have come to expect from Cowie this season.

Cowie made a great start and scored in five minutes. The energetic McMillan chased down the Kincorth goalkeeper. His poor attempt at a clearance found Maclean 30 yards out. Maclean took one touch and placed an exquisite chip over the hapless keeper and into the top corner.

A few minutes later, a long hopeful ball found a Kincorth striker one on one with Stubbs. He rounded Stubbs and fired the ball into an empty net.

Kincorth took the lead when another long ball found the striker and he lobbed over Stubbs.

It was obvious Thistle were missing the talismanic Grant as there was no one able to find the key to unlock the Kincorth defence with a killer pass. If he decides to hang up his boots at the end of the season and concentrate on long distance running he'll be sorely missed.

Cowie started brightly in the second half. After good play by Adie and Fraser down the right, the Kincorth keeper made another mistake allowing Leith to fire home.

Kincorth got a third goal to fire themselves back into the lead. Poor defending by Cowie allowed the forward to slot home.

In the 70th minute, an innocuous cross from the right appeared to be sailing into the hands of Stubbs. Inexplicably defender Taylor seemed to think he was in the opposition half and leapt to bullet header past his own goalkeeper.

Taylor protested that he'd never scored an own goal before but with a finish like that it's hard to believe him. To compound his misery he was promptly substituted for a replacement less than half his age.

Cowie will be playing in the Premier Division again next season and have finished as the top team in Stonehaven.
