Stonehaven 1 Hall Russell Utd 4
Ian Cruickshank was sent off midway through the first half as Stonehaven were beaten 4-1 at home to Hall Russell United in the Superleague on Saturday.
The visitors kicked off in very wet and tricky underfoot conditions however they started the brighter and grabbed an early goal when a ball down the Stonehaven left wasn’t dealt with and full advantage was taken. After the goal the game settled down and it was a fairly evenly matched first half up until Ian Cruickshank was sent off after needlessly kicking out at a Hall Russell player following a separate challenge by Erskine on Scott MacGregor.
Hall Russell took advantage with a second goal soon after. The ball was played into the box and was punched clear by Michael Smith however it fell invitingly to an unmarked Hall Russell midfielder who fired a right foot effort into the top corner.
Stonehaven started the second half looking more determined and within 15 minutes clawed a goal back when Glass converted a penalty after Will was fouled just inside the area. The home side were looking the more threatening at this point and seemed most likely to grab the equaliser. It wasn’t to come however and Hall Russell went on to score a third when The Hive failed to close down a Hall Russell midfielder on the edge of the area and he fired past Michael Smith.
The third goal took the wind out of the Stonehaven sails and a fourth goal followed at the death after a mistake in the box by Will. All in all it was a bad day at the office, but the effort shown in the second half gives cause for optimism.
Stonehaven: Michael Smith, MacGregor, James Smith, Cameron, Gray, Ellis, Will, Cruickshank, Stewart, Shand, Nicoll. Subs: Glass, Paterson, Cormack, Bryant, Barbour, Mathieson, Low.
