Ellon Meadows U-17’s .......4
Bervie Caley YFC U-17’s .....4
(AET Bervie won 4-2 on penalties)
Bervie travelled away to this cup match again thinking they had a full squad for the first time this season but had two call-offs just before the game.
Heavy rain was forecast for the afternoon and it started more or less as the referee blow his whistle to start the match, it eased off at times but was relentless throughout the match, extra time and penalties.
The match was played on the junior pitch at Ellon which was in very good condition before the kick off,, having being spiked then rolled, but needless to say was worse the wear afterwards!
Bervie had a poor result away from home the previous week against Newmachar in the league and the players were up to make amends.
Ellon had a few new players since the match back in September and were a much stronger side, which they showed by scoring first at the 10-minute mark after poor defending and lack of closing down by the Bervie midfielders.
The equalizer came after 13 minutes when a through-ball from S. Smith found Forbes who was downed in the box and the ref blew for a penalty, Forbes stood up to take the kick, hitting high to the left, the keeper going the wrong way.
Bervie then hit the Ellon bar when a run from Morrison from midfield had the defending team backing off and allowed him time for a strike on goal in the 22nd minute.
Ellon then took the lead again with a good passing move and a strike low into the corner which the keeper had no chance with.
Bervie then made their first substitution with Darling coming off and Bellu going on. Tyhis did result in more Bervie pressure but the final pass just was not getting there.
Eventually Bervie did score when a Morrison ball out diagonally right was perfect for Dandie to run onto and he hit an unstoppable shot across the keeper low into left side of the goal.
Half time 2-2.
The goalie Walker had twinged his knee before half time and was replaced l by McCombie, while Darling came back on with S. Smith going back into defence.
Soaking wet by this time, the players weren’t keen to come back out of the changing room for the second half. They did so, but neither side threatened much in the poor weather, then in the 70th minute Ellon scored after a long ball went over the Bervie defenders.
Dandie sustained an injury to his back and was replaced by F. Smith then Darling was booked just after after a bad tackle on him and a resultant pushing match with the Ellon player in the 85th minute.
Bervie pushed for the equalizer and had quite a few chances but were either saved or narrowly past. There were some heavy tackles going in from Ellon and from a resultant free kick just outside the box Bellu scored a screamer low into the right of the goal.
Full time 3-3, and extra time to be played to the dismay of the players from both sides.
Bervie scored in the midway thruough the second half of extra time with a cracking strike from Forbes and thought they had won the match only for Ellon to equalize after some very poor defending by Bervie, so penalties beckoned.
Bervie scored through Forbes, Darling and Morrison and McCombie had saved one from Ellon and they had also put one wide, thus S. Smith went up to take the fourth knowing if he scored the match would be would be Bervie’s.
He hit it hard, high and left, leaving the keeper no chance and was mobbed by his team mates.
A better team performance than the previous week and a result ground out from determination.
