Sports awards date set

Aberdeenshire Sports Council Sports Awards Evening is to be held at the Garioch Sports Centre, Inverurie, in March.

More than 200 people will attend the popular annual awards evening.

Last year, guest of honour was Katherine Grainger CBE, the 2012 Olympic Double Sculls champion. Katherine received a Special Achievement award jointly from Alan Still, the sports council chairman, and Provost Jill Webster of Aberdeenshire Council.

The evening on Friday, March 20, will be a way of rewarding and acknowledging local sports people in Aberdeenshire for their commitment to and/or achievement in sport during 2014 (or in the case of the Service to Sport category over many years).

Over 50 nominations were received for last year awards. All nominees will receive a certificate to recognise their contribution to sport.

In the post 2014 Commonwealth Games it is a great opportunity for clubs and other organisations to recognise the talent in their midst, to give local sports people and volunteers the acknowledgement they deserve, and to show the wealth of talent which is evident in the area.

Aberdeenshire-based athletes who took part in the Glasgow Games and can attend will receive a Legacy Medal from Aberdeenshire Sports Council. It was felt fitting to recognise their selection in a home games.

Nominations are now being accepted for the nine categories. Contact the secretary below by February 27.
