Following the 2-1 home victory last time around this was always going to be a tough away game.
The lads did it the hard way though with 10 men for 60 minutes, conceding a penalty early on but they dug in and won the game with three well-taken goals.
The game was played at Garioch Sports Centre astro truff pitch which was a nice change but meant the lads would have to adjust quickly if they were to compete.
The first half got under way and Locos were putting on the pressure with a strong wind making it difficult for Stonehaven to move up the pitch. However when Stonehaven got into the final third they looked dangerous.
The first goal went to Colony Locos following a trip in the box. The penalty was saved by Josh Forbes but the Locos’ striker was quickest to react to convert from close range.
Stonehaven sparked into action following this goal with Cameron Pyper playing a great through ball to Lewis Collie who calmly finished into the corner of the net.
Now the score level it looked like the game was going to be an evenly contested match however following a handball decision in the middle of the pitch striker Pyper received two yellow cards for arguing with the ref.
Not long after this Colony Locos found themselves with a free-kick on the edge of the area. The Locos’ striker hit a perfect free kick into the top corner to put them back in the lead.
Half time 2-1.
Stonehaven, although with 10 men and 2-1 down, always felt they were in the game and started brightly. Shortly after the restart a flick on by Craig McKenzie to Collie at the edge of the area ended up in the back of the net.
This was the lift that was needed to keep the energy up as it was going to be tough with 10 men on the big astro pitch to keep this level of concentration and intensity up. As expected, Locos had a lot of the ball but could not break down the Stonehaven defence led brilliantly by Stuart Ferguson.
However, when on the ball he always looked dangerous and caught Locos on the back foot a couple of times.
Colony Locos did manage to get behind the defence with 10 minutes to go but hit the bar and went over from 10 yards.
Stonehaven then mounted an attack with the ball up to Lewis Collie, he then played in Craig McKenzie who capped off a brilliant game with a left footed finish into the bottom corner across goal.
The whole team pulled together and put in a great shift, truly deserving the victory.
It is almost impossible to pick out a man of the match but Josh Forbes in goal deserved a mention for being absolutely solid and pulling off a couple of important stops.
