Having already been beaten by Glentanar three times this season already, the last time 10-3, the Stonehaven Youth 2001 squad prepared more in hope than expectation against the League Leaders who had beaten title rivals Ellon just 5-0 earlier in the week

Coach Summers advised the squad that would have to be at their very best to take anything from the first of the Midweek Evening games on the grass at Mineralwell.

Stonehaven scored first when Koning broke down the right putting a square pass to Hinchcliffe whose first shot was blocked by the keeper but he confidently hammered home the rebound. Wood added a second on 7 minutes busting a gut to get on a Stenhouse cross.

Wood got his second on 11 minutes hitting it sweetly into the corner for his second and Stoney’s third.

Stonehaven as a defensive unit was looking very solid, with MacGregor making an amazing last ditch tackle in the 27th minute. On the half hour Munro picked up the ball in midfield and beat one player, and another, out-muscled a third who tied to stop him and glide past a fourth and finished superbly. Glentanar pulled one back a minute later. Half-Time 4-1

Hinchcliffe finished clinically after 51 minutes to put the local lads 5-1 in the lead. And then Mowatt, showing a welcome return to form after injury, made it 6-1 from a well-placed low shot into the corner after 55 minutes, and then Wood got his first hat-trick of the season in the 58th minute. 7-1.

This was a season best performance from the Stonehaven youngsters.

A much improved third place in the League can be secured by taking one point from the last two games, the first of which is at home to Ellon on Sunday.
