Stoney Ladies defeated in league cup

The first competitive game of the 2014 season started with Stonehaven Ladies making the journey southwards to play Edinburgh South in the first round
of the Second Division League Cup.

Stonehaven Ladies wanted to start the season with a victory and that’s what they set out to do.

Within 20 minutes, a fierce shot from Taylor was saved from the Edinburgh South keeper but the save landed at the feet of E.Bowie to find the back of the net.

The first half was a close contest with both teams having good possession. Edinburgh South then took a grip of the game by scoring three quick goals to make it 3-1. A few saves made by Paterson in the Stonehaven goal kept the game at 3-1 going into the break.

After a half time talk, Stonehaven went out to prove a point. Gauld and Penny created more space in midfield and started to control the game by making passes through to the wingers and strikers.

It didn’t take long for a second for Stonehaven as Gordon found the ball on the left wing and drove into the box and slotted home from close range. E.Bowie then got her second and Stonehaven’s third goal to level the game.

A through-ball from midfield found her through on goal and she slotted home. With a new found enthusiasm in their legs, a second from Gordon made it 3-4. A wonder strike from outside the box leaving the Edinburgh South keeper with no chance.

The fifth goal was created by some great play on the right, the ball found its way to Ferries with plenty of time to slot it home for a goal on her competitive debut for Stonehaven.

Sixth goal came from Penny who was about 20 yards out to find the top left hand corner.

Seventh and last goal came from Taylor who, in her last two attempt,s missed by a couple of inches, hit the post and then third time lucky slotted past the keeper to make it 3-7.

A close game in the first half but second half was dominated by Stonehaven, with the Edinburgh South striker upfront having little chances due to great defending by the Stonehaven rear guard.

Stonehaven go through to the next round, which is to be played on March 23.
