Bervie entertained Westdyke who were sitting level with them at the top of the league and, for the first time, enjoyed the luxury of a full squad to pick from.
Westdyke started the match positively and tested the home defence with a long ball forward which Davies had to stretch to reach.
However, Bervie carved out their first chance after a strong challenge from McHardy in midfield saw the ball break to Collie, he was forced wider than he wished but still got an effort in which the keeper saved.
Bervie’s next chance came after Leisk made a good catch and quickly released Collie on the left his cross found Avis at the back post, but his header went over.
Bervie were growing into the match with some neat interplay and carved out another chance after a quick throw saw Smith released on the right, however his effort went wide.
Westdyke came close to taking the lead when Bervie were opened up down their right, Leisk was only able to get finger tips to the ball but Davies was on hand to clear off the line. Bervie then had another chance after a poor goal kick was nodded down to Blacklaw and he struck a powerful effort which went just over.
Bervie nearly gifted the visitors a chance when Smith and Webster got into difficulty, but Davies was covering and put in a fine challenge to snuff out the danger. Bervie came close to grabbing the lead on half time, Webster’s powerful effort was turned away by the keeper with the resultant corner being scrambled clear off the line. Bervie made two changes at half time, Montgomerie and Gordon replacing Avis and Smith and were on the attack again early on,
Sawyer heading the ball clear for Blacklaw who drove forward trying to play McLaughlin in but he couldn’t reach the pass. Bervie’s next chance came after Salmond spread the ball wide to Blacklaw, his ball back infield finding Salmond but his effort went wide.
Montgomerie was starting to have an influence and did well to beat three down the left before he was fouled.
Bervie broke the deadlock with around 10 minutes to go when a throw-in found Montgomerie and his ball in found McLaughlin who held off his man to slot home low to the keeper’s left.
Bervie then sealed the win, the ball again finding its way into the box following a throw and Collie showing good feet to adjust and slot home.
