Youth girls lose to Aberdeen

Stonehaven Youth Girls Under-16s hosted Aberdeen Girls U-16s at the weekend, with the local girls narrowly losing a seven-goal thriller.

Stoney started slowly and after ten minutes Aberdeen took the lead when a speculative shot from the edge of the box crept in at the far post.

Slowly Stoney began to grab a foothold, with Johnston, Spence and Townsend wrestling control of the overcrowded centre of the park.

Porter went close, then Ogilvie surged onto Porter’s pass to skip past a challenge and shoot from the edge of the box. The shot was well-saved but as the ball ballooned into the air, Ogilvie bravely met it to head the equaliser. Just reward for the attack of Ogilvie, Porter and Tench who hadn’t given Aberdeen’s defence a moments peace. By now Aberdeen were relying on fast counter attacks but this suited Stoney whose defence of Mainland, Kelly and Robertson were nothing if not quick. When Aberdeen did get through, Imray in goal was coming out as a sweeper ‘keeper to clear.

Within moments of coming on, Simpkin slipped a beautiful pass around the Aberdeen full-back into the rampaging Porter’s path and she slipped it low under the ‘keeper for a Stoney lead.

Half-time: Stonehaven 2, Aberdeen 1.

The second half was equally lively, with Irving coming on in midfield and Doyle’s energy pepping up the attacks. Stoney were dealt a quick double blow as first a miss-hit cross looped over the ‘keeper, then a corner was only half-cleared and a cross-come-shot looped in at the far post. Wonder goal or miss hit?

The game wasn’t over as Stoney brought on the poise of Brawley at the back and pushed Townsend back into midfield with immediate reward. She threaded a through ball from the centre circle into the onrushing Porter’s stride and without further ado she thundered an equaliser before the ‘keeper could set herself.

Just as a draw looked likely there was late heartache for Stoney, as an Aberdeen corner was driven back in from the edge of the box and the ball crept in at the far post for an agonising late Aberdeen winner.

Full-time: Stonehaven 3, Aberdeen 4.
