GOLF - BIG ENTRY FOR COMPETITION
A BIG entry of well over 100 players is lined up for the first Innes Medal competition of the new season at Stonehaven Golf Club on Saturday.
Some members cut their teeth on the summer course on Wednesday when a medal was held but for most members, the real golf starts this weekend.
The Stonehaven course, at just over 5100 yards, is by no means a long course but it will feel that way on Saturday for those who have played through the winter months.
Medal tees will be in operation, including the new tee at the seventeenth hole, and all players will need longer irons than they have been used to if they are to find the putting surfaces with second shots.
Handicaps, of course, will also be at risk, meaning that one or two bad habits which may have crept in during the winter will no longer be allowed.
Preferred lies, for example, can be taken only on short-cut areas, and not in semi-rough or rough, as was the case during the winter.
Players must also mark their ball before they lift it and clean it. Failure to do so will result in a penalty shot.
Notices have been posted in the clubhouse detailing the exact rules and all players are urged to follow them to the letter.
*Last weekend's Scramble competition was cancelled after heavy overnight rain flooded the course.
