GOLF - OPEN INVITATION TO LOCAL GOLFERS

STONEHAVEN Golf Club is holding an open day next Saturday (May 16) as part of its drive for new members.

Golfers all over the North-east are being invited to play the course that day for a special reduced rate of 5.

And any golfer who decides to join as a full member can do so on the day for 350, saving 100 on the annual subscription.

Club manager Morag Duncan said: "The open day is part of our drive to attract more members and it will give golfers in the North-east who may not be members of other clubs the chance to play our course and see how attractive it is.

"We also want people to see our clubhouse, which has been refurbished recently and enjoys the most magnificent views of Stonehaven Bay.

"We'll also be encouraging our members to bring a guest along for a game on May 16 so we are planning for a busy day at the club."

Tee times can be booked on 01569 762124.

The club has already distributed more than 10,000 leaflets to homes in the AB39 catchment area advertising the club's facilities.

Mrs Duncan said: "It's not only golfers we want to attract to the club. We welcome social members, who can join for less than 1 a week and enjoy the facilities in our clubhouse.

"We serve coffees and tea every day and we now also have first-class catering for lunches and evening meals."

The club also has a well-stocked bar, a snooker table and a room which can be hired for meetings and functions.

Next weekend, the club's medal competition will be moved to Sunday, May 17.

A WICKED wind from the south-west pushed the standard scratch up to an unusually-high 67 at Stonehaven on Saturday.

It meant a tough day at the office for a field of nearly 150 golfers as they battled their way round in a double-header competition.

At stake were qualifying places for the J M Low Trophy as well as the May Innes Medal.

In Division 1, former club champion Chris Brown made a welcome return to form, topping the leader board by two clear shots with a net 64.

His gross score of 69 was just pipped for the best-scratch award by the reigning club champion Neil Irvine, whose 68 should have been at least two shots better, had he not tweaked two very short putts wide.

In Division 2, Gary Daun and Jim Hepburn qualified for the Innes Medal finals later in the season with net 66s while in Division 3, John Stephen returned the best net score of the day with a sparkling 63.

The top 32 net scores qualify for the J M Low Trophy and the cut came at net 70.

Proudest septuagenarian in the club currently is George Gardiner, who last Wednesday beat his age by five shots in the medal competition.

Very few golfers manage to achieve this feat but 74-year-old George knocked it round in 69 shots and in the end was irritated that he had missed a three-foot putt on the 17th green.

George played the first nine in 35, three over par. He dropped a shot at the tenth and then holed a 20-foot putt to save par at the twelfth. He played the first two gully holes in par then knocked his tee shot close at the fifteenth, holing the putt for a birdie. He then parred home to break 70 for the first time in a golfing career which started in 1966 when he was 31. His handicap has been cut from 12 to 11. The CSS for the day was 64.

Good news and bad news for Stonehaven in the Champion of Champions competition, sponsored by the Evening Express.

Scratch champion Neil Irvine went to Kemnay this week and beat their champion, Alan Cunningham, by 3&2. He now goes to Peterhead in the next round.

Stonehaven's handicap champ, Stuart Wood, however, lost on the last green at Auchenblae.
