Hall Russell United 1 Stonehaven 2

Stonehaven went into this Superleague meeting at Denmore Park last Monday, looking to get three points to ensure their safety.

They had the first chance in the first minute when good play between Buchanan and Cormack saw the ball fall to Gray but he could only fire over.

Hall Russell should have taken the lead when they broke upfield but Erskine sent his header wide despite being unmarked.

The opener wasn’t long in coming however, a long ball over the top was fired home by Erskine.

Stonehaven weren’t behind for long and straight from the restart they were awarded a penalty for handball in the box and Cruickshank stepped up to make it 1-1.

Hall Russell should have made it 2-1 just minutes later but Stonehaven cleared the ball off the line. The resulting corner saw the ball fall to Erskine but he could only shoot wide despite again being unmarked.

Halfway through the first half Cormack should have put The Hive in front when put through on goal by Gray but Simpson managed to put him off and his shot went well wide.

Smith did well when a Hall Russell free kick from 20 yards was palmed away for a corner.

Cruickshank should have put Stonehaven ahead with five minutes left of the first half. The ball was played across from Glass to Low who played the ball across but Cruickshank fired wide. Just seconds later long throw Gray fell to Low but he fired over.

Stonehaven took the lead just before half time when the ball was played into the box and after exchanging passes with Reid it was Cormack who made no mistake.

Five minutes into the second half Gray tried his luck with a free kick 25 yards out but it was easily held by Simpson.

On the hour Cruickshank did well down the left before playing the ball across to Low who should have scored but the ball was cleared for a corner.

Shand replaced MacGregor on 65 and was immediately involved as he nodded the ball into the path of Cormack who turned his man and saw a good shot saved.

Reid should have made it 3-1 with 20 minutes left when Simpson spilled Robertson’s shot but he missed from just yards out.
