HIVE END 15 YEAR WAIT TO LIFT CUP

Stonehaven 2 Inverness City 2 (Stonehaven won 5-4 on pens) STONEHAVEN Juniors ended a 15 year wait for silverware on Sunday afternoon when they won the Morrison Cup following a nerve-racking penalty shootout against Inverness City at Simpson Park, Keith.

Stonehaven started the brighter of the two teams and early pressure forced a couple of corners although they ultimately came to nothing.

The first real chance was not far off however and a good ball across goal fell to Armstrong who really should have scored but fired straight at the Inverness keeper.

The game was becoming pretty even contested with neither team really in the ascendancy when Inverness took the lead through Kevin McLeod against the run of play.

Stonehaven drew level just moments before half-time when the ball broke to Low in the box who picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season.

The second half more or less followed the same pattern as the first as both teams looked to try and gain the upper hand. Stonehaven took the lead after a ball played over to the right wing found substitute Stewart who cut inside before firing a shot past the Inverness 'keeper.

The lead was not to last however and a Colin Mason strike levelled the game to send it to a penalty shootout.

Michael Barbour, Ross Donald, Ryan Stewart, Michael Adam, and David Glass all converted their penalties and Kevin Fraser was the unfortunate man to miss from 12 yards for Inverness as Stonehaven won the shootout 5-4.

Stonehaven: Smith, Low, Mathieson, MacGregor, Barbour, Adam, Nicoll, Cameron, Hudson, Glass, Armstrong. Subs: Donald, Smith, Stewart, Bain.
