Sunnybank Junior Ground at Heathryfold Aberdeen was the neutral ground picked for this fixture, KO 6pm.

With nearly his full squad available for selection Manager Pete Williams had the unenviable task of having to tell some players they would not be tonight’s line up.

From the off Johnshaven went on the attack. From an indirect free kick inside their own half. Captain Scott played it high into RGU’s 18yd box, Scott Beedie out jumped their defence but his header was parried by the keeper and then caught.

An angled shot in the 2nd minute by Paton went inches past the far post.

At the other end RGU picked up on a defensive error and pushed the ball too far past the keeper which meant their angled shot hit the netting for a goal kick.

In the 16th minute S. Blease slipped the ball into the path of Lee Paton whose blistering shot beat the diving RGU keeper to put up a cheer from the Johnshaven dug out and their supporters in the stand as they went in the lead 1-0.

In the 25th minute A. Tringham played the ball out wide to Slavin who when on a fine solo run which ended with his cross being blocked. The resulting corner by Paton found Scott Beedie at the back post but his header just inched past the wrong side of the post.

A couple of minutes later having regained possession inside Johner’s 18yd box an RGU player ran at goal but keeper Reid came out to make a brilliant block and prevented a certain goal.

RGU in an attempt to score piled on the pressure and in a five minute spell had first a wild shot closely followed by another go just past the post.

Their best chance came from a corner which was headed on and smashed into the top of the bar.

The Johnshaven defence however soaked up the pressure well and rode it out.

In the closing minute of this half A. Tringham put in Smith who shot on the turn. The ball deflected by the foot of RGU player and the resulting corner by Paton found S. Blease at back post whose header went into the keeper’s arms.

Half Time Score 1-0

In the opening minute the Blease brothers both went up for a header but unfortunately an RGU player got there first, the resulting corner came to nothing.

Right after this another attack from Johnshaven came as Smith rattled his shot off the bar. It rebounded back to S. Blease whose shot was saved by diving keeper.

Next an RGU free kick from inside their own half was cleared by Scott Beedie, their resulting corner was then shot wide.

Still keen for another Johnshaven goal in the 56th minute Smith put Paton through on goal but the RGU keeper made a good save.

On the hour-mark the fresh legs of Jordan Rausch replaced an exhausted Shaun Blease.

About 5 minutes later RGU took a quick long throw- in from which they tried to shoot but Reid made the save.

In the next attempt to score an RGU diagonal free kick was parried down by keeper Reid then cleared by R. Blease.

80th minute could have proved to be an anxious time for Johnshaven when an RGU free kick into 18yd box was headed on and looked to be going in at the far post until keeper Reid pushed it round post. Resulting corner played to back post went out for goal kick.A few minutes later under pressure in the 18yd box an RGU shot was punched clear by Reid.

With 5 minutes to go an injured Andrew Tringham was replaced by Stephen Scott.

Another chance to increase their lead came for Johnshaven but their direct free kick by Smith went over bar.

RGU continued to press and won a couple of corners. The 1st was headed over bar and the 2nd played to the back post went out for a goal kick.

Almost on time a collision of heads between Captain Scott and an RGU player halted the game as both needed treatment. The game restarted with drop ball and as Johner kick the ball back to RGU the whistle was blown for full time.

Mass cheering from the team and their supporters as they realised they had just added to the clubs history by reaching the Final of the 2nd biggest Amateur Cup competition in Scotland.

It had been a hard fought game and the players well now deserve the short rest they get before being back in League action on Wednesday night at Sheddocksley against Glendale XI.
