Newtonhill had to shuffle the pack again as they beat Old Aberdonians on October 20.
In came Dave Christie, Richard Moir and Andy Farquhar to play alongside Alan Brooks in the back four. With so many defensive changes it was always going to be difficult for the unit to gel quickly and how true this was when Hill found themselves 2 goals down in the opening 5 minutes. A disastrous start in a must win encounter.
After the initial shock Newtonhill started to come more into the game creating half chances when Barraza and Fisken both should have done better.
The visitors were always dangerous on the break and almost increased their lead when the post kept the score at 0-2.
Newtonhill got themselves back into the match right on half-time when a fine move involving Christie and Graham Smith sent Carmichael clear to score from 10 yards.
An inspired Alexander team talk seemed to do the trick when less than a minute into the second half the scores were level.
A fierce shot by Barraza wasn’t held by the keeper giving Stevie Law a simple task from 2 yards. Newtonhill then went on to push for the 3 points with Ross and a Fisken header being denied by the post.
In the final 10 minutes the game could have gone either way. A succession of corners from the visitors failed to break down the Hill rearguard. With game heading for a draw it was the home side that got the break to claim all 3 points. A fine run and cross from Law found Barraza who calmly slotted home in the 93rd minute much to the delight of the Newtonhill support. A welcome 3 points against a decent Old Aberdonians.
