Luthermuir Women were on cup dutyon Sunday afternoon with a game against one of their league opponents for this forth coming year.

Jeanfield Swifts had recently promoted their U17s girls to the ladies team with a number of them playing together over the last few years. The first chance fell to the Muir girls when on 5 mins good work by Reoch and Lownie let her in behind the back line, her shot was saved well by the keeper.

Luthermuir continued to pass the ball around and within a few minutes another chance fell to Lownie, Barker played the ball in behind the two centre backs and Lownie raced away, her shot was again saved by the keeper.

The play became even over the next 10 minutes with some good work by both teams. The breakthrough for the Muir girls came on 22 minutes when the keeper was adjudged to have carried the ball out of her box.

Bruce stepped up and drilled the ball low and hard round the wall into the corner with the keeper struggling to see past her wall.

On 25 minutes Borland had to be replaced by Forbes after picking up a knock and she nearly created the second.

A ball across by Murison was controlled by Forbes and her pass behind the back line had the lively Lownie away again, her shot again was saved by the keeper.

Jeanfield had struggled to break down the strong defence the Muir had today and were awarded a free kick on 32 mins dead centre about 25 yards out, the free kick was fired just over the crossbar with Aiken looking in control of the situation.

With a couple of injuries before the half the game seemed to struggle to get going again. The last chance of the half fell to Lowie on 44 minutes when she was released down the left by Shaw, as she cut inside to goal her shot was saved brilliantly by the keeper.

HT 1-0

Luthermuir continued where they had left off in the first half by pinning their opponents deeper into their own half looking for the killer second.

A great move on 49 minutes when Lownie fed the ball though to Reoch and as she raced away she cut the ball back to the on rushing Murison who crossed low from the right, Shaw raced in and fired her shot just over. On 53 minutes a great ball by Forbes over the back line had Lownie racing away but her second touch was heavy and the keeper came out and saved at her feet.

A knock to Young’s knee on 57 minutes forced her to retire from the game with the Luthermuir management making some changes to the back line with the introduction of Murray. For the rest of report see p31.
