MACKIE EDGE OUT GARIOCH
Garioch 12 Mackie FP 2nd XV 13 A YOUTHFUL Mackie second XV travelled to Inverurie on Saturday to play a much-needed fixture against a strong and experienced Garioch side.
The game was a tight affair with Mackie closing out the game to win by 13 points to 12 with scores from Robertson and Gray.
The match started with a quick score by the Garioch pack that looked to dominate the youthful Mackie pack led by experienced campaigner Robertson at the age of 24. The player was a class act in a young side and led from the front, both physically and vocally to ensure his teammates ground out a win.
The Garioch score came about through a driving maul and needless penalties given away, it looked ominous from here that the size and nous of the Garioch forwards would be too much to combat by such an inexperienced Mackie side.
However some persistence and the introduction of Milne to the back row with Potter and Owen in the half backs the Mackie side started to dictate the game through clever probing kicks and clever running lines by the whole squad.
The Garioch side, intent of stopping the fast pace of the Mackie side, started to mount up a high penalty count. This created good field position for the away side resulting in a great score by Ross gray in the corner soon followed by a penalty by Milne.
The second half started very much like the first with the Garioch side now refreshed and ready to try and dominate the youthful Mackie pack. This persistence paid off with another quick score by the Garioch side led by their rampaging number 8.
However Mackie kept their heads and the second half was almost a mirror image of the first with Robertson, Milne, Owen and Potter frustrating the opposition. This was supported by a pack who was heavily mobile to ensure the Mackie half backs had crisp clean ball to release the back line, brimming with the pace and power of Kay, Allen, Grieg and Dale. These four enjoyed running strong powerful lines to set up great field position for the halfbacks to exploit.
On the hour mark, Potter chipped over a static defence to chase down a kick which bobbled just before the line to deny him a score, in discipline by the Garioch full back allowed Robertson with quick think to quickly taking the resulting tap and crash over for the score.
The final minutes of the game resulted in the Mackie pack and halfbacks controlling the ball and ensuring Garioch were pinned deep into their half the sound of the full time whistle ensured delight in the squad and another victory to the season's tally.
