The Mackie P4 Juggernaut rolled onto the Garioch mini rugby tournament in Inverurie last weekend, and with a formidable list of victories so far this season the P4s were keen to continue their hot streak and show the people of the Garioch what Mackie rugby is all about.
Pitched up against other local rivals Aberdeen Grammar, Deeside, Aberdeen Wanderers and the hosts Garioch, the Mackie side started slowly for once making hard work of their pool games against the hosts, Deeside and Wanderers with some sloppy tackling and slow support play.
While they managed to secure the requisite points it was looking from the sidelines that some complacency could be setting in after their long string of success this season.
However before their final pool game the coaches got their size 10s working and soon enough the boys began firing on all cylinders again to put in an impressive display against Grammar to make it through to the final against Deeside.
Deeside are becoming regular opposition in these finals and the two teams are getting to know each other very well. Consequently these games are always very tight affairs and so it was to be again this time.
Starting strongly Mackie surged to a two try lead before being pegged back to 2-2. A further try each before half-time meant it was still tied at the interval. After the break Mackie again went ahead despite some seriously strong defence from Deeside and got another two tries.
Deeside again pulled back the deficit and it was looking like it was going down to the wire when Mackie got the final, and decisive, score a minute before the end.
The final seconds saw Mackie defending for their lives as Deeside put everything into trying for a third comeback but the whistle went and Mackie were crowned Garioch P4 champions 2011.
