Mackie U16 rugby team extended their unbeaten league run to six games at the Meadows on Sunday. An outstanding first half display helped them to a 45-19 victory and they remain top of the league.
Mackie scored six first half tries to lead at half time 40 points to 7, but were unable to sustain this high level of performance throughout the second period. They were only able to add one more score, but conceded two to a very determined Ellon side, who refused to lie down and who produced a very spirited second half performance of their own.
Once again Mackie were unable to field a full squad due to holidays, and were more than ably assisted by two of the U15 squad who both played a part in the victory.
Mackie’s star of the day was, without doubt, Andrew Wood who played his first ever full game for the squad. Andrew is showing some real potential and is a welcome and much-needed addition to the team.
During the first half, the Mackie forwards were in outstanding form and showed some real improvements in the scrum and the ruck, with Beeton, Berrisford and Smith in the van.
Replacement scrum half Kirkwood played another Captain’s role and was supported throughout by the exuberant New whose tackling style is a lesson to all.
