The Mackie P4s left Stonehaven in very wet conditions to head south to Stirling County. When they arrived the sun had come out but the rain had left the pitches in atrocious condition. Undaunted the P4s pressed on and played some very entertaining rugby on what will surely be the worst surface they encounter this year.
The format for the day was to be a round robin affair with the top two from each pool playing off against each other in some final games. Mackie were in a pool with clubs they don’t usually see during the season, Bannockburn, Stirling and Perth. First up were Perth who where very quickly “put to the sword” by an eager Mackie team who had been kept waiting for their first game and ran out 9-2 winners.
Then came Bannockburn, this was by some distance the best quality game of the entire day and with some ferocious tackling and counter rucking from the start the Mackie boys made it clear they where not there just to make up numbers. The pressure applied by Mackie resulted in a fantastic 4-1 victory that left the team exhausted but very happy.
The remaining games were unfortunately affected by the energy expended against Bannockburn and the boys were clearly suffering in their encounters against Stirling (7-3 losers) and Lenzie (4-2 losers). This should not detract from their great early performances though and with a bit of thought in future about pacing themselves on such long days, this squad will surely go from strength to strength as the tournament season draws closer.
