MACKIE RETURN TO ACTION WITH DESERVED VICTORY

MACKIE S1s played host to Crieff and Strathearn on Sunday, in what was their first competitive game in three months, and despite the lack of match practice, both sides were determined to play expansive rugby from the start.

Crieff started brightly, with some rampaging runs from their big forwards, making inroads into the Mackie half.

Mackie's defence was solid however and soon forced an error, giving possession to the Stonehaven side.

From the scrum, Mackie had their first chance to run with the ball, and they did so to great effect, cutting through the Crieff backs with ease to cross the line for the first of their fifteen try haul.

From the resulting kick-off, Crieff once again tried to force their way towards the Mackie line using their big forwards, and once again the ball was turned over and quickly recycled out to the backs for another well taken try.

This set the pattern for most of the day, where the superior handling skills of the Mackie backs, coupled with the outstanding support play from the forwards, made the difference between the two sides.

Moving the ball quickly from one side of the pitch to another, from depth and at speed creates space to score tries, and is a skill that not many teams in this age group have mastered.

More importantly however, Mackie played as a team, not caring who scored the points, as long as the points were scored, a maturity that also sets them apart from others.

Crieff to their credit played to the final whistle and played the whole game in good spirit, never once letting their heads go down.

Mackie: Barber, Beeton, Burt, Dunbar, Elphinstone, Finlayson, Fotheringham, Greig, Hynds, Jackson, Kennedy, Kirkwood (Capt.), Leitch, Lilley, Morrison, Ramsay, Smith, Stewart, Tweedie
