MACKIE ROMP TO COMFORTABLE WIN

Mackie FPs 1st XV 27 Ross-Sutherland 5 MACKIE had played Ross at the beginning of the season and lost narrowly up at Invergordon.

Hopes were high for this weekend but injuries and absentees robbed the side of much of their forward fire power.

Undeterred, Mackie kicked off and soon had Ross under pressure. They managed to clear their line up to the half way line but Dan Lane, making his home debut for Mackie, caught the ball and launched a high up and under towards their line. Their full back failed to gather the ball and Dan caught it beautifully to cross for a lovely opening try which went unconverted.

Five minutes later another good break saw Fourie head towards the line but desperate defence brought him down just short. A quick ruck saw the ball recycled and scrum half Mellis was on hand to dive over the line. Mackie continued to press and after 20 minutes the ball went down the field in a flowing move. From the breakdown, the ball was switched right and Fourie accelerated to the line and dived under the tacklt to score in the corner to make it 15-0.

Ross came back into the game and started to put some continuity together. They established a good position 15 yards out but Thompson took turnover ball in a good steal and fed to Pollock who had been having a good game. He in turn offloaded to vice captain Clyne who broke through vain tackles and set off down the pitch. 30 yards on and looking concerned, he passed to Dey who outstripped the defence to score a lovely try in the corner.

The game continued to ebb and flow and Mackie sealed a great first half by winning a good scrum and shipping the ball wide. Lane came on a looped move on the outside and sidestepped the Ross defence to go in under the posts to give Levack his first kick of the day and Mackie a half time lead of 27 – 0

If the first half was champagne rugby, then the second half saw a game with the bubbles gone. Ross came in to things and scored a try thanks to Mackie indiscipline. A yellow card to captain Mitchell for persistent infringement saw arguing and fighting break out persistently through the second half. What should have been a high score was dissipated by lack of focus.

As the final whistle went, the score was the best result recorded by the team this season. The fact that no one was celebrating said it all. Flat champagne is not pleasant
