Mearns are Division 1 champions

Insch 2 Mearns United 6

MEARNS United are the Division One North Champions. Needing a point away to Insch last Wednesday to secure the title, Mearns romped to a 6-2 victory. The result was never in doubt, almost from the first whistle.

Mearns got the early goal which settled any nerves in six minutes. Irvine sent in a cross and Stevie Law shot past the keeper.

It was 2-0 in 16 minutes when Richard Fotheringham fired the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.

Mearns had to wait until three minutes into the second half to score their third. Stuart Grant flicked the ball on and Rob Armstrong chipped the keeper.

Insch got a goal back with a header in 51 minutes.

There was no stopping Mearns and in 57 minutes, man of the match Fotheringham scored another cracker from the edge of the box.

It was 5-1 in 65 minutes when Armstrong beat three men inside the box and slotted past the keeper.

In 73 minutes, Craig Irvine cut inside from the wing and shot across the keeper and into the corner of the net to make it 6-1.

Insch grabbed a second goal five minutes from time when Mearns failed to clear a cross and the ball was poked into the net.

The Mearns attitude was excellent. They did exactly what they had to do to become champions and are already looking forward to life in the Premier Division next season.

Mearns finish their season at home to Nicols Amateurs on Saturday. The game has nothing at stake, but Mearns will be aiming to finish their season on a high note.
