BADMINTONscotland Grampian Regional Development Officer Tom Lambert will lead eight promising youngsters into action at the World Schools’ Badminton Championships in Malta from March 28-April 4.
The Scotland team, all from Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, is: Josh McKay, Sam Muir, Andrew McGillivray, James Hinchcliffe, Maria Leith, Anna McLeod, Katie Townsend and Colleen Duncan. Andrew comes in for the unlucky Matthew Duguid, who has been forced to drop out through injury.
The families of the eight children have been holding fundraising events, including bingo and snail race nights, raffles and bag packing at supermarkets to help fund the trip. Mackie Academy and local businesses have also given financial support.
The four boys will head for Gzira bidding to improve on Scotland’s sixth place two years ago in Taipei and the girls will be just as keen to better Scotland’s 11th place.
Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “This is a great opportunity for these eight young players to test themselves in a world event and I wish them every success. We look forward to them doing Mackie Academy and Scotland proud with some good results. I am sure it will be a great experience for them.”
