On Saturday, Montrose SC held its first Open Day under the banner of Push The Boat Out, a national Royal Yachting Association initiative aimed and introducing the sport to new people and getting them onto the water safely.

All week the weather forecast had said it would be breezy, so it was a shame that the weatherman was right this time. With the Club’s weather station (@MSCWindy) recording average wind speeds of around 30 mph and at least one gust of 50+ mph, it was not a day for taking novices for a sail. Rory, Paul, Bryan, Roger and Craig did venture out when the wind eased to demonstrate what could be done, and with only one capsize it was an easier day than it might have been for the safety boat crew of Graeme and Chris.

Commodore Kathy Locke said: “With the high winds we weren’t sure if anyone would come along, but we had around 25 potential new members through the door, which was absolutely brilliant!”

One of these, Glyn from Aberdeen, is already a sailor, although more used to the wildlife of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe than that of the Basin - and so he was the unfortunately only visitor who got a close-up view of the water as it sprayed over the deck of the Wayfarer he was crewing with Paul.
