Saturday saw the opening of the bowling greens at Stonehaven and President Graham Penny asked Mr Eric McWilliam to throw the first bowl of the season.

Past President & Honorary Member Eric joined the club in 1954 and since then has had an illustrious bowling career.

He threw his first bowl when he was only four years of age at the Northern bowling club in Aberdeen, which was his mothers club.

During his 60 years of bowling Eric has been the singles champion six times and has won all the club competitions apart from the Novice cup as he was allowed to enter.

Eric is also a Past President of the Aberdeen and Kincardine Bowling Association, an advanced Area Coach, Scottish Bowls Umpire and was Secretary of Stonehaven for 25 years and was the organiser of the popular Dunnotter cup.

On a social level Eric supplied the music for the clubs Saturday nights entertainment

When asked for the highlights of his bowling career he replied that firstly being a member of Stonehaven where he has made numerous friends- both home and away, followed closely by winning the Bon Accord singles in 1967 and also having the honour of being chosen to be a World Bowls umpire in 1984 at the Westburn Park in Aberdeen.

It was quite a family affair on Saturday as Eric’s wife Sandra; this years Ladies club President raised the flags to commemorate the opening of the Recreation Grounds.

The President’s Select won the opening game by 32 shots to 26.

Members please note that all club and green fees MUST be paid by Saturday April 19 if they want to be included in the Competitions this season.

Also anyone wishing to take up the game of bowls or any bowlers who have newly moved to the area will be made welcome.

The points system for the Hat Nights will start on the first Monday in May.

Would Senior Section members please note that the Competition sheets are now on their notice board and players are required for the first competitive game against Culter BC on Wednesday April 23.
