Stonehaven Bowling Club’s 65th annual Palmer Trophy was contested at the Recreation Grounds last week and won convincingly by local player Mark McIntosh and Tarves BC member Michael Presly.
The two young bowlers won all their matches with a bit to spare and were deserved winners of the cup and a good sized cheque thanks to terrific sponsorship from Titan Tools whose representative, Graeme Stewart, presented the prizes.
The other prizewinners were runners up G.Penny/R. Harrison and semi-finalists I. Howie/J.Lawson all Stonehaven and K. Farquharson/A. Miller from Kintore BC.
On Saturday, the annual fours tournament was again fortunate to receive excellent sponsorship –this time from ITS Energy Services and a good entry of 60 players took to the greens in the early morning.
However, the skies darkened and, after a downpour, it was decided to complete the competition on the indoor carpet.
This obviously suited the eventual winners, John Lawson/Mike Neville/David Baillie and John Mackie, who having lost their opening game outdoors then went undefeated indoors to lift the cup and were presented with the sponsor’s cheques by ITS ‘s sales manager Brian Thomson.
Runners-up were L. Roddie/I.Howie/S. Gellatly and J. Roddie with the semi finalist teams skipped by B. Corstorphine and F. Patterson also the recipients of some useful pocket money.
There is no doubt that a bit of extra effort and valuable sponsorship has helped boost the entries for these two competitions and the Club will strive for further improvement on both counts next season.
The Senior Section visited Woodend BC last Wednesday and again returned with a creditable victory by 16 shots.
Individual rink scores were (Stonehaven skips first)-
R. Smith 12, R. Dawson 20; R. Harrison 19, C. Fraser 18; A. McAllister 20, W. Bothwell 12; A. Binnie 23, A. Coull 8.
The Seniors Top Nine team will be selected this week for the next round of the competition on Thursday 31st July at Balgownie and prospective players should keep an eye out for the selection being posted.
