The tournament runs from March 28 to April 3 2016, so over the next few months the team will not only be busy training but also fundraising to cover the costs associated with attending such a tournament.

The eight players are Matthew Duguid, Sam Muir, James Hinchcliffe, Josh McKay, Anna Macloed, Katie Townsend, Colleen Duncan and Maria Leith.

The first fundraising event takes place on Friday, November 20 with a Bingo Night at Stonehaven Recreation Grounds. For more information contact Judy Duguid (07833 368277) or Annette Leith (07985 986846) or Joan Prieur (01569 768358).

Over the past few weeks there has been a strong representation of North East badminton players in various events throughout Scotland.

At the start of October Maria Leith played well in a strong field to reach the semi-finals of the U15 singles as well as the U15 mixed with her partner Josh McKay (also from Stonehaven) at the 2015 Scottish Junior Championships. Maria went a stage further in the U15 girls doubles coming runner-up in a well fought final. In the U15 boys singles and doubles Josh won through to the quarter finals, whilst Matthew Duguid provided the North East presence in the U19 tournament by reaching the semi-finals of both the singles and men’s doubles.

Halloween marked the start of the two-day Yonex East of Scotland Junior tournament down in Edinburgh this year. North East once again had a good presence in tournament with players across all the tournament age groups. In the U13 Lindsey Ireland fought through to the semi-final of the girls singles and Josh McKay reached the semi-finals of the U15 boys singles and doubles. Jodie Harris was a commendable runner-up in the both the U15 girls singles and doubles, whilst Nick Darcy-Evans and Sam Muir played through to round 2 of the U17 doubles with Nick also reaching the quarter-finals of the U17 boys singles. Again rounding off a successful tournament for NE was Matthew Duguid who came runner-up in the U19 men’s singles and doubles.

The North East Secondary Schools Singles League also culminated in day 3 of 3 on Halloween with players participating from schools from across Grampian. Mackie Academy once again won the overall schools trophy whilst the individual titles went to Connor McRobbie (Mackie Academy) for the U14 boys, Emma Donald (Forres Academy) for the U14 girls, James Hinchcliffe (Mackie Academy) U16 boys, Maria Leith (Mackie Academy) U16 girls, and Arnav Mehta (Elgin Academy) U19 boys. The first weekend in the November saw some of our players travel down to the Glasgow area for two Scottish Schools events. The SSBU U12 singles and doubles took place on Saturday 7th November in Wishaw with Daniel Harris providing a strong North East presence in the U12 boys events making it as far as the semi-final in the singles and the quarter final of the doubles. On Sunday 8th November a NE U14 team travelled down to the Sir Craig Reedie Badminton Centre in Glasgow to take part in the SSBU Junior Inter-Area event. The team had some extremely tough matches against very strong opposition from other areas of Scotland but excelled themselves to come second achieving the runners-up spot.

NE player Sam Muir (Stonehaven) and Nick Darcy Evans (Aberdeen) had great results at the Highland U18 Badminton Competition at Fortrose when Sam won the singles and Nick came second. They went on to team up to win the doubles title to add to their medal success.
