The Stonehaven Community Sports Hub initiative are on the lookout for more sports clubs to get involved.

The initiative was presented at a Consultation Event at Mackie Academy on the January 30 by sport scotland and Aberdeenshire Council representatives.

Community Sports Hubs are a key part of sportscotland’s contribution to Legacy 2014. They are designed to increase the number of people participating in sport within local communities by improving access to sport for local people and by supporting local sports clubs to work together. The aim is to establish at least 150 hubs operating across Scotland by 2015.

Each Hub will be unique but the common thread is that each hub works to the following five principles:

• Growth in participation

• Understanding community needs

• Supporting community leadership

• Offering a range of sports

• Bring all appropriate (key) partners/ groups/people together

A spokesperson for the initiative said: “We are looking to engage as many clubs within the local area and we are looking for individuals to join the working group and lead smaller project groups to tackle the common themes that the CSH will work on: communication, facilities, funding and training.”

The working group have started the process and created the following 4 values:

Fun - Fun for all

Community – Working together to increase involvement in sport and improve well-being.

Development – Shared goal to create centres of excellence for sport and foster valuable life skills.

Legacy – A positive sporting environment for all with quality resources.

Some of the many benefits include pooling of resources, shared learning, increased awareness of activities, capital projects, increased number of members, coaches and volunteers, special events, training provision including first aid, PVG and child protection.

Richard Thomas a working group members and Stonehaven YFC representative said: “There is a lot of potential in a community like Stonehaven to really make this work and create a legacy we can be proud of.”

The next meeting is on Wednesday April 2, 7pm at Mackie Academy
