Stonehaven Golf Club holds open

Some one hundred and thirty five players from clubs all over Scotland took part in Saturday’s 18 Hole Gents Open.

It was was played in some of the most challenging conditions encountered all season.

The wind speed and direction was fairly constant for most of the day although, arguably, the later starters got it slightly tougher.

In the scratch category, ex -tonehaven member now playing out of Portlethen, Mark Barnard, took the spoils with a one over par round of 67, a one under par first nine was the base for the impressive score in the conditions.

Two shots behind were local members Barry McGillivary and Iain Taylor. Another three categories were played for and in the 0 to 9 handicap section another visitor Kintore’s Steve Chalmers took the top prize.

The 10 to 15 category was won by Gordon Ironside, narrowly pipping Richard Denning of Newmachar with the better inward half, Eric Innes took third prize back to his new home of Alford.

The category for handicaps between 16 and 28 was again dominated by visitors with Inverurie golfer Kevin Boylan nett 61 two shots better than Stuart Mitchell of Portlethen and Jamie Lumsden.

The nearest the pin prize at the par three 18th hole was won by Steve Chalmers of Kintore to give him a nice profitable
day.

Vouchers to the value of almost £700 were paid out and can be collected from the clubhouse.

Stonehaven Golf club is anticipating a bumper field again this Saturday on the ever popular Captains day. The event the highlight of captain Terry Middleton’s year is being sponsored by Arnold Clark Volvo. Adult members will have the opportunity of winning a Volvo V40 R Design car; all they have to do to win the car is get the first hole in one at the 18th on the day.
