April’s competitions come to a close this weekend with the first ‘major’ of the season taking place namely the Cowie cup however there have been some notable performances so far already.

The April Innes medal qualifier was won in Division one by Bob Leggate with a two-over-par 68 nett 61 that took the honours, Bob also qualifies for the Captains Cup, having the lowest gross of the day.

In Division two there will be two entries into the final in September with Tim Prentice and Colin Black both sharing nett 64s. The clear winner in Division three was club Treasurer Malcolm Ritchie with a nett 58.

In the Wednesday Medal qualifier to be played in August, it was Brian Lawson and Stuart Dempster who shared top spot, Tim Prentice continued his fine start to the season with a nett 61.

In division three it was Ian Mckay who took the last qualifying place for April. Tim Prentice again proved to be too good for the field, winning the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Care Medal with a nett 62 and having two shots knocked off his handicap in two weeks.

With a change of format for next year’s fixture list, Saturday’s shamble competition will be the last one played for. The winning pairing of Stuart Jones (20) and Ian Carnie (27) had an impressive combined stableford tally of 91 points.

Stonehaven had a narrow 3 - 2 victory over local rivals, Banchory, in the third round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Classic. Squad rotation meant the team captain didn’t play, however debutants winter league scratch champions Kevin Riddell and Ross McAllan both managed victories in their games, as in the previous round anchor man, Stewart Allsop, gave the local team the final point to secure the victory.
